Hotfixes Dec. 27 – Vashj’ir Removed

Posted by Uriah On December - 28 - 2010

Are you tired of going all the way out to Vashj’ir for those pesky Night Elf dig sites?

Blizzard has removed Vashj’ir from your Dig Site table, you’ll no longer have to survey that zone again.

Vashj’ir dig sites no longer unlock for players. They felt too punishing without additional benefits compared to low-level sites, and were much more difficult to obtain artifacts in due to the way Vashj’ir navigation works.  Source

Dig Site Distribution

Posted by Uriah On December - 23 - 2010

There is a great post by Simca on MMO’s forums compiling data from Archaeology’s dig sites to find out which continents are the best to farm fragments of a specific race. The original data is mostly from Wowpedia’s list of Dig Sites (and a lot of work in-game to make sure it works as intended).

The poster made an excellent table by using various tools and resources (Wowpedia + Excel spreadsheet + If statements). So for those of who you love numbers, here ya go.

Read more details from the post here or our new Race Distribution page.

So You Wanna Get Zin’Rokh?

Our Guide Articles are brought to by readers like you!

Today’s Guide about Zin’Rokh is put together by poster Patrick.

So You Wanna Get Zin’Rokh?

If any of you are like me, the first thing you saw when you looked at archaeology was the monster 2-hander, Zin’Rokh, the Destroyer of Worlds.  Not only was it a throw back to Vanilla times, it was looking like a possible BiS item.  I vowed that I would devote all of my time after hitting level 85 to farming up this bad boy…now, many hours and several hundred turn-ins later, my dedication to that vow is beginning to waver.

So, you wanna get Zin’Rokh? Be advised that this undertaking is not for the faint of heart.  It is rough and rocky traveling.  It is hours of farming that may net you nothing but a couple achievements and some flavor items.  That said, if you’re up for the challenge, this guide will help you along the way.

Dec 20th Hotfixes

Cataclysm Hotfixes – Updated Dec. 20

The search radius to find an Archaeology node from the Archaeology ability Survey has been increased. This will result in fewer searches needed while in the “green” range of surveying.

Update: It seems that they made it so that nodes (fragments) can be discovered at a larger range.  It used to be the would always spawn within looting range.  Now they can be discovered a little farther away meaning fewer repeat green surveys.

What is “The Hat & Two Tools” 10th Race? Placeholder?

Posted by Uriah On December - 21 - 2010

Many players have posted on different forums and have even emailed WoW Dig Site inquiring about what the “hat and two tools” icon on the archaeology profession pane.

Well, there is no definitive answer to this from Blizzard Blue posters yet. The most popular theory is that this is just a simple placeholder icon (for next race or project type coming to Archaeology).  There’s nothing currently data-mined or displayed on the data-base websites such as Wowhead that links this icon to anything in-game right now. According to a WoW Insider post, this icon was used in Beta/Alpha before each race had an individual icon during development. (Which makes sense, in my humble opinion.)

It was either at Blizzcon 2010 or not long ago on the official forums that Ghostcrawler said that archaeology is intended to be easily expanded. WoW Insider’s the Queue commented on this topic yesterday but this still felt news worthy to post for the readers.

Do you have information related to what this icon is? Feel free to contact us or comment below!

5-Man Group-Wide Buffs (Quests)

Posted by Uriah On December - 16 - 2010

There are repeatable quests inside most of the Cataclysm 5-man Dungeons which allow a buff to be applied to your party when you submit the proper keystone to the quest object.

These quest giving objects have the daily blue “!” above them and turning in the right keystone for the zone will give a buff (which is limited to that 5-man).

It’s currently believe that you need the appropriate Archaeology skill level required to loot the keystone, in order to turn in the quest (Example 450+ for Tol’vir Hieroglyphic.)

Edit: My tip went through at WoW Insider! They posted this Article w/ thanks to WoW Dig Site.

Blackrock Caverns: Dark Iron Contingency Plan

Zone Buff: Dark Iron Contingency Plan (Reduces elemental damage done to you by 5%.)
- Requires Dwarf Rune Stone turned in at Stone Tablet

Halls of Origination: Map of the Architects

Zone Buff: Map of the Architects (Increase movement speed)
- Requires: Tol’vir Hieroglyphic turned in at Large Stone Obelisk

Need Addon? Try Archy!

Posted by Uriah On December - 15 - 2010

After surveying around for days, I thought to myself, “I wish my Projects would all be displayed in one list”. *Trumpets*Hey, someone has probably made an addon for such a feature!”

Well someone did this and they named it Archy.

With Archy installed, you will never have to manually open that Archaeology book ever again!  Not only does it track current projects but it has many more features (as listed below)!

  • On-screen movable list for the dig sites on the continent you are current on
  • On-screen movable list of the artifacts you are researching that can be filtered to display only the races for the continent you are on
  • Racial fragment types are automatically recorded for dig sites that you visit
  • Solve artifacts with (left click) or without (right click) keystones by clicking on the racial crest icon in the on-screen artifacts list
  • TomTom support to help you navigate between dig sites
  • Able to display dig sites on the minimap (closest only or all dig sites)
  • Blacklist dig sites in the on-screen digsite list by right clicking on the dig site name. Perfect for when you have a bugged node or a dig site that is in a zone that you dislike.
  • Sound triggers for when you have enough fragments and/or keystones to solve an artifact
  • A counter for how many times you have successfully dug at a dig site
  • A dig recorder to see where at a dig site you have successful dug

Give this great addon a try for your Surveying needs!
